I have been pretty terrible about blogging. But it’s been a super busy year and I thought I’d sort of recap it a little and offer a preview of what’s to come.
This year I released two books! The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley and Violent Ends! I’ve been blown away by the response to Five Stages. The emails I’ve gotten and the reviews I’ve read have just made my heart grow. I never thought people would respond so strongly to Drew’s story, but I’m so happy they have. Five Stages is also going to be published in Brazil and Turkey, and I’m so psyched about that.
Working on Violent Ends, while stressful (we wrote and put out a book in 16 months!) was one of the best experiences of my life. We got great reviews from all the major trade publications, including a starred review from VOYA. People have been talking about it, and talking about the issues in the story, and that’s why I wanted to do it. Even people who hated the book are still engaging in discussions, and that’s awesome.
Of course, I absolutely owe the book to the writers who took the journey with me and trusted me not to screw it up. They are the reason the book is amazing. I can’t thank them enough.
In less than a month, We Are the Ants will hit shelves. Can I just tell you how nervous I am? For real. NERVOUS. Ants has already received starred reviews from Kirkus, Booklist, School Library Journal, and Publisher’s Weekly, and is a Junior Library Guild Selection. I’m so excited for you all to read this book. But also nervous as hell. I hope you like it.
The same day ANTS comes out, Five Stages also comes out in paperback! And Spring 2017, my next book, tentatively titled Center of the Universe, will be released. So, lots of stuff!
This was an awesome year for me to meet readers and librarians and booksellers. I got to attended the NOVA Teen Book Fest, TLA, ALAN, and some amazing fests all over the U.S. Getting to meet readers has been so much fun, and I hope I’ll get to meet more of you in 2016. So far, I know I’ll be at the LA Times Book Festival in April, and I’m looking forward to that.
2015 has also been a great year for reading! I’ve read some outstanding books, and added even more to my wobbly TBR pile.
Here are some of my favorites:
- The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds
- A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
- Willful Macines by Tim Floreen
- The Alex Crow by Andrew Smith
- Not Otherwise Specified by Hannah Moskowitz
- All the Rage by Courtney Summers
- Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman
- A Wake of Vultures by Lila Bowen
I didn’t get to read quite as much as I’d wanted to, but I think quality trumped quantity this year.
So that’s about it. It’s been a spectacular year and I’m looking forward to what 2016 has in store.
Hope you all have a happy and safe holiday season, and a wonderful rest of 2015!
